Hibiscus Seeds: Cultivating Tropical Beauty
Planting Instructions:
Site Selection: Choose a location with full sun to partial shade.
Ensure the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter.
Soil Preparation: Loosen the soil to a depth of 12-18 inches.
Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.
Sowing Seeds: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting to enhance germination.
Sow seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last expected frost date.
Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed trays or pots filled with a good quality seed starting mix.
Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain a temperature of 70-75°F.
Transplanting: Transplant seedlings to the garden when they are 4-6 inches tall and after the last frost.
Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a week before transplanting.
Space plants 2-3 feet apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.
Direct Sowing (Optional): For direct sowing, plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in the garden after the last frost date.
Space seeds 2-3 feet apart and thin seedlings to the strongest plants.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season.
Water deeply at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to disease.
Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Mulching also helps to maintain an even soil temperature. Bloom Time: Hibiscus plants typically bloom from late spring to fall.
The flowers are short-lived, but the plant will continue to produce new blooms throughout the season.
